Intro

The poison dart frogs are a group of frogs in the family dendrobatidae. They are mainly found in Central and South America. The dart frogs can be set apart from their cousins by two main features. The poison dart frogs have brightly colored bodies and they are, as the name suggests, poisonous.

Habitat

The poison dart frogs are common in humid, tropical environments such as Central and South America. These frogs are mostly found in tropical rainforests and various countries. The countries include:

The dart frog’s natural habitats include subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, subtropical or tropical moist montanes and rivers, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, lakes and swamps.

Appearance

Most poison dart frogs are small, measuring up to only 1.5 centimeters (0.59 in) in adult length, although a few can grow up to 6 centimeters (2.4 in) in length. They weigh about 2 grams, depending on the size of the frog. Most poison dart frogs are brightly colored, displaying aposematic patterns to warn predators. Their bright coloration is associated with their toxicity and levels of alkaloids. Although these frogs appear small and venerable, they are very dangerous.

Eating Habitats & Prey

The poison dart frog is a very picky eater. It only feeds on primarily insects such as other arthropods. These include:

The poison dart frog finds its prey using its excellent vision. They capture their prey using their long sticky tongues.

Poison

Poison dart frogs are very poisonous.Their brightly coloured bodies warn predators to keep away. The poison dart frogs are some of the most toxic animals on Earth. The golden poison dart frog has enough venom to kill 10,000 mice, 10 grown men, or 2 bull elephants. The poison affects the heart. The skin is used as a poison for blowgun darts and arrows by some tribes of the rainforest of Colombia. To make the arrows or darts poisonous, the people rub their arrows or darts against the poison dart frogs.

Endangered

The poison dart frogs are currently not listed as endangered and are bred in captivity for the pet trade. However, the destruction of their habitat is causing their numbers to decline.

Character Trait

If I were to give the poison dart frog a character trait, it would be nonviolent . A poison dart frog has enough poison to kill almost any animal, but the frog doesn't go around killing all the animals. It only uses its poison for self defence. The poison dart frog is not a very bloodthirsty creature but a gentle creature that only uses its dangerous poison if threatened.
