During that time, the facial tumour disease has drastically reduced the devil population to a point that in May 2009 it was declared Endangered. The Government of Tasmania are taking a lot of steps to reduce the impact of disease and have also build a facilitate to grow healthy devils in captivity. Some other reasons rather than the diesease that caused the decrease in population includes red fox who preys on devils, collisions with motor vehicles and some being illegaly smuggled outside Australia.
